GSM Summer 2026 Field Trip

Summary

The geology of Downeast Maine is a fascinating cross-section of orogenic, glacial, and coastal processes. Granites, basalts, and sedimentary deposits convey a violent history of crustal collision, explosive volcanism, and intrusion during the Middle Paleozoic. Striations, glacial erratics, extensive peatlands, and submerged forests tell the more recent story of Pleistocene glaciation and isostatic adjustment of Maine’s iconic coastline. From our base at Cobscook Bay State Park Campground, we will explore geologic localities from Lubec to Meddybemps over two days.
